Inter Miami makes first two signings

David Beckham’s MLS club has officially announced its first two signings. Last week, Inter Miami – the 23rd team to join Major League Soccer – revealed via Twitter that Matías Pellegrini and Julián Carranza had joined the club.

Recognize the names? Probably not. They’re far from the aging European superstar. Like wayyyyyyyy far.

Both are just 19 years old. Both are Argentinian. With recent notable exports from MLS to Europe, both have hopes of following those same footsteps.

“Look what James did playing at Banfield. It gives you motivation that you can also do great things,” says Pellegrini of James’ European career via intermiamifc.com.

Pellegrini was acquired from Estudiantes and Carranza is from Banfield, two teams playing in Argentina’s Primera División. Both will remain on loan with through January 2020.

“It’s important for us that we found young, exciting attacking players that are on the upside of their career and have the potential to be really good players in this league,” said Inter Miami CF Sporting Director Paul McDonough. “We will continue to build and add quality players that are the right fit for our Club. We started with youth, but we know it’s also important to have veteran players who come from both overseas and within the league to balance out the roster over time.”

Career Statistics:

Carranza

  • Currently in second season with First Division
  • 10 goals across 30 games
  • Stints with the U-17 Argentina National Team

Pellegrini

  • First Division debut in 2018
  • 3 goals across 15 games
  • Two Copa Libertadores appearances
  • Has represented both U-17 & U-20 Argentina National Teams

“Both Julián and Matías showed us they really wanted to take the next step of their career with Inter Miami CF. We liked that Pellegrini can play inside and out wide, has very good aerobic capacity and can cover a lot of ground, while Julián is a very grounded player with an impressive work rate. He’s the player that strives to score goals and is very good in the box,” added McDonough.

Reports are indicating the club will soon turn its eye to adding some English players.

“I think you will see if you look at our young signings, we’ve made substantial investments in them,” said Jorge Mas, one of the co-owners of Miami. “We’re going to couple them with players who have played in Europe who are very well known.”

“We’ve looked at some English players. We’re having some conversations with some English players and we anticipate Inter Miami will have some English presence.”
